Sunnies Face Fluffmatte Lipstick in 143 | Review

Oh, the hype for this product is real. When the marketing photos started popping up on Instagram, I knew this would sell out fast. Sunnies Face officially launched online last August 08, 2018 and sold out within 2 hours. Luckily, I got my hands on one shade: 143. I ordered mine from Lazada on the day of the launch and got it on Friday so I was able to test it out during the weekend. Is this product really worth the hype? Read on to know my thoughts!

Cruelty-Free

Yes

Sunnies Face Fluffmate comes in 9 gorgeous colors. Five out of nine are nudes, but I was really drawn to red and darker colors.

The color I got is 143 which is described as a berry rose. The other colors that I also really like: Girl Crush (terracotta rose), Major (most perfect cool red), and Hot Sauce (tomato red).

Packaging

Front

The packaging and the whole branding of this lip product remind me of Glossier. It’s very minimalist and gives off a cool girl vibe.

Box

Each lipstick comes in a cardboard box that matches the shade of the lipstick. The shade color is on the flap, and the ingredients are written on one side of the box. The box also has the expiration dates, the weight (3.2g), as well as the cruelty-free and paraben-free logos. This product is made in China. It doesn’t have a period after opening (PAO) indicator.

Bullet

The lipstick barrel itself is made of plastic. It’s really thin and compact, perfect for carrying around in small purses. The cap shuts tight on the body. I was worried about the cream almost white barrel because it could get really dirty. However, the material feels dirt proof. I’ll have to revisit this in a month or two.

Source

This is one of the colors that really grabbed me. I’m a fan of rose-colored lipsticks. However, after ordering it, I feel like I already owned this color.

Arm Swatch

No filter, taken indoors in front of a window.

I swatched it against two other lipsticks that I felt were really close to the Pink Sugar x Project Vanity These Lips Don’t Lie collection. Just a Fling is a little bit redder and Woke Up Like this a little pinker. 143 appears more brown and muted.

Initial lip swatches

No filter. Please excuse my growing mustache, and yes, my lips are always this dry.

On the lips, it’s a very gorgeous dark rose color with a hint of mauve. I feel like this color is perfect for our current cold weather, dates, and nights out with friends.

Application

Applicator

The bullet has a very powdery matte finish, but when applied, it’s very creamy and doesn’t tug on the lips. It doesn’t emphasize the fine lines or cracks on my lips. It also doesn’t feel very heavy on the lips and doesn’t feel drying. The tip is pointed enough that you don’t need to line your lips to get a good lip shape.

Patchy

No filter, taken indoors in front a window.

However, depending on my lip situation, it sometimes applies patchy. I have to go over my bottom lip about 2 to 3 times to get the color to appear even. I’m not sure if this is the only color with this problem though.

Performance

Here’s where we get a bit critical. Because this is a bullet lipstick, I wasn’t expecting it to last very long. It doesn’t transfer much on straws and cups when drinking. But the color on my bottom lips disappeared with every meal. It also doesn’t leave much of a stain and doesn’t bleed around the mouth.

On me

I was out with friends the whole day, and I swear, I spent way too much time in the bathroom re-applying lipstick.

And now my biggest gripe: it’s a pain to re-apply. On my first day of testing, after my first meal (which was ramen) almost every color in my bottom lip was removed. It was a bad lip day, and I had lots of cracked, flaky skin on my lips. When I tried to re-apply, the color wouldn’t stick. It would just stick to the remaining color and the dry skin. So I wiped everything off, including the cracked skin, and residual oils from my meal. When I swiped it again, the color wouldn’t stick on the insides of my lips. I had to go back multiple times for it to look decent. This happened every time I had a meal (which is a lot, to be honest), and it just takes too much time and product. I feel like I’ll use this up within a month or two if I wear it every day.

Patchy

No filter, taken indoors in front a window.

On my second day of testing (today), I have better lips. I didn’t have the same issue with the dry, flaky skin, but it still looks patchy after re-applying it. Is this just with this shade or are all the colors this way?

Price and Availability

The price, for me, is just right at P345 per lipstick. I was expecting it to be priced at around P500 above, but good for Sunnies for offering it a more affordable price. For Metro Manila consumers, it’s quite accessible with two locations in malls. But for VisMin consumers, the only option is to order online via their website or Lazada.

As of writing, it’s currently sold out online but will restock on August 18. To get it in the store, you have to queue for about 30 minutes to an hour to purchase. All of this is due to the hype and will probably be more accessible in a month or two.

Verdict

PROS
  • Quite affordable for P345
  • Sleek and sturdy packaging
  • Creamy texture and light-weight formula that doesn’t feel drying
  • Doesn’t tug on the lips during application
NEUTRAL
  • Out of stock everywhere (due to the hype)
CONS
  • Not long lasting
  • Hard to re-apply
  • 143 appears patchy

Will I repurchase?

Yes. I’d like to check if I just got a dud formula. Right now I’m thinking of getting either Hot Sauce or Girl Crush. Major is calling out to me but I rarely wear cool-toned reds and I already own MAC Ruby Woo.

Final Thoughts

I have mixed feelings about this. This shade is gorgeous and would be perfect for date nights. The color is very pigmented, and it doesn’t tug on the lips when applying. It’s very light-weight and doesn’t dry the lips. However, it’s not long lasting and can be a pain to re-apply.

If you like bullet lipsticks and you can get your hands on it, you can give it a try. If not, you’re not really missing out on much.

6.8/10
